Prerequisite: General good health

The Eight Brocade Chi Kung consists of 3 components:

  1. Wu Qing Xi, The Five Animal Frolics. Originally taught by Hua Tor, a medical sage of the Tung Han Dynasty in about 230 A.D.
  2. Yi Jin Jing, The Changing Tendon Sutra and
  3. Xi Sui Jing, The Bone Marrow Cleansing Sutra.
Both Yi Jin Jing and Xi Sui Jing were taught by Bodhi Damo, a Buddhist sage who came to China from India in about 500 A.D. He founded the school of Ch'an (Japanese Zen) Meditation, as well as the lineage of Shaolin Martial Arts.
Sometime during the Tang Dynasty in about 700 A.D., Ba Duan Jing was taught and practiced in central China. The form had 8 basic movements. Our form consists of 16 movements. It was modified during the Song Dynasty in about 1000 A.D. It incorporates the essence of all the 3 components and manifests their aesthetic postures into the extensive flow of energy: just like embroidering the exquisite flower patterns onto the 8 pieces of tough but soft silk.
